Vie for honours in the weekly logic tournament

Think your logic problem solving skills are world-class?

Every week we publish a new competitive quiz for you to try your hand at. At the end of the week, we score each player on accuracy and speed. You can see how your skills stack up in the leaderboards. These searchable reports show the top-ranked players each week, month, quarter, and year.

At the end of each year, the highest-ranked players complete in the Annual Championships to find out who's the most logical developer

Think you've got what it takes to be the best?

Here's a sample logic quiz

Sample quiz

The clues presented below (numbered #1 through #3) are in the form of four digits arranged in a square surrounding a fifth digit, like so:

A B
E
C D

Each clue uses the same algorithm to compute E. Mark a choice as correct if its integer can replace E.

The following rules apply to this algorithm:

1. Each digit must be used once and only once. For example: "A * (A + B) / C" is not a valid algorithm. Neither is simply "A + B".

2. A, B, C, D and E must be positive integers. 3. No numbers may be used in the algorithm other than those corresponding to the letters in each square. For example, " (A * (D - 3)) + (C / B) " is not a valid algorithm. 4. Parentheses are allowed in the algorithm.

5. The only valid mathematical operations are multiplication (*), division (/), addition (+), and subtraction (-).

#1 #2 #3

76 95 E
7 6 2 18 8 23

Note: More than one algorithm might fit all the clues, but only one possible solution for E will be found in the choices below. Remember: one and only one choice is correct.
